Grace Lutheran Women Make Over 200 Prayer Shawls Annually for Local Ministries and Hospice

Date of Event: Sunday, March 12, 2017

A special blessing of Prayer Shawls is scheduled at all three morning worship services at Grace Lutheran Church on Sunday, March 12. The first of three yearly blessing ceremonies will be for prayer shawls being delivered to Four Seasons Compassion for Life (Hospice) and for members of the congregation delivered by the pastors and the Stephen Ministry.

Since the Prayer Shawl Ministry was begun in 2004 by Skip Andersen, as many as 39 members of Grace Lutheran craft the prayer shawls and prayer squares throughout the year. While making some prayer shawls for Hospice over the years of this ministry, the group last year made a commitment to providing seven to twelve shawls per month to Hospice. They also make more than eighty shawls annually for members of the congregation and other ministries. Shawls and prayer squares are made available each month at Grace’s Soaking Prayer services the second Friday of each month for those who wish to take one. This last Christmas, a request from the Jail Ministry to provide 10 shawls for Grandparents currently raising children of inmates was fulfilled.

Lori Schaefer, one of the Prayer Shawl Ministry coordinators, said, “Prayer shawls are given for joyous occasions as well as health or grief concerns. We also give shawls for weddings and births, and make baby blankets for newborn infants in the congregation. Prayer squares are used to spread God’s love.” She went on to say that the ministry has sponsored a couple of knitting/crocheting workshops to encourage participation. Some members of the group make two to three shawls every month while others make just a few shawls each year. The Prayer Shawl Ministry members meet the fourth Thurs. of each month at 10 a.m.
