Patriotic Concert at Grace to Honor Veterans and Active Duty Men and Women

The music ministry at Grace Lutheran Church will perform a special patriotic concert to honor veterans and active duty me and women of every branch of the service at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, 2017. American veterans from the community at large are cordially invited to join Grace Lutheran congregational veterans, families and friends for this patriotic music and video salute. Those currently in the military or veterans of military service are invited to wear their uniforms at the concert.

Under the direction of Burton Bumgarner, Director of Music and Organist at Grace, perform​ers will be the Grace combined adult choirs and Blissings, local vocal trio, who will all present patriotic salutes, spirituals, early American patriotic songs, and lead the entire gathering in singing familiar American hymns. Organist, Julie Winchell, will accompany the musical groups and perform a solo work for the occasion on the organ.

Some special features of this year’s patriotic program include Grace Lutheran members Lt/Colonel Roger Christensen, USAF (Ret), who will read excerpts from President George Washington’s farewell address, Colonel Barry Pierce, US Army (Ret), will read the story of Francis Scott Key’s National Anthem, Grace Welch, a high school youth will recite the Gettysburg Address, and three middle school youth will present a tribute to Pearl Harbor and read excerpts from President Ronald Reagan’s 1989 Viet Nam Memorial Day address. Lt/Colonel Christensen had assignments in weather, research and development, and operations research. Col. Pierce spent his career in Army intelligence.
